Bioactive enclosures mimic natural ecosystems using live plants and cleanup crew organisms (isopods, springtails) to process waste. This creates a self-sustaining environment requiring minimal maintenance compared to traditional setups. Bioactive vs Non-Bioactive: Understanding the Difference

Break-Even Point: Bioactive costs more upfront but saves time and money long-term. By year 2, most bioactive setups cost less than non-bioactive due to eliminated replacement costs.

The 4-Layer Bioactive System

A proper bioactive enclosure uses distinct layers from bottom to top. Each layer serves a specific purpose in the ecosystem.

Layer 1: Drainage Layer (1-2 inches)

Cleanup Crew (CUC) are small invertebrates that consume feces, shed skin, dead plant matter, and mold. A diverse CUC creates resilient ecosystems.

Recommended Starter CUC: 20-30 Dwarf White Isopods + 50-100 Tropical Springtails. This combination handles 90% of waste in most tropical enclosures.

When to Add CUC
Wait 24-48 hours after substrate settles and plants are added. CUC needs time to burrow and establish before animal is introduced. Add animal 1-2 weeks after CUC.

Feeding Your CUC
CUC feeds primarily on animal waste, but supplement during establishment or low-waste periods:
