Gargoyle Gecko Lighting Guide: UVB & Photoperiod

Gargoyle geckos are crepuscular (active at dawn/dusk) and can survive without UVB lighting when supplemented with dietary vitamin D3. However, UVB lighting is increasingly recommended as research shows measurable health benefits for bone density, activity levels, and coloration. This guide covers UVB equipment, photoperiod management, and setup positioning.

UVB Status: Historically considered optional for gargoyle geckos, but current best practice recommends low-level UVB (UVI 1.0-2.0) for optimal health. Geckos provided UVB show improved feeding response, more vibrant coloration, and better calcium metabolism compared to those on D3 supplementation alone.

Gargoyle geckos can synthesize vitamin D3 from UVB exposure, which regulates calcium absorption and bone health. While they can survive without UVB using dietary D3 supplements, providing UVB lighting offers physiological and behavioral benefits.

UVB Benefits:

  • Natural D3 Synthesis: Gecko produces own vitamin D3 through skin exposure to UVB-B (290-315nm wavelength). More bioavailable than dietary D3

Can Gargoyle Geckos Live Without UVB?

  • Yes, with proper supplementation: Gargoyle geckos can remain healthy using calcium WITH D3 powder (dusted on insects 2x weekly) + D3-fortified CGD
  • Historical Success: Thousands of gargoyle geckos have thrived in captivity without UVB for decades using supplementation
  • However: Modern research (2015-2024) shows measurable improvements with UVB. Current best practice = provide low-level UVB whenever possible
  • Budget Constraint: If UVB not affordable initially, start with D3 supplementation and add UVB later. Gecko will not suffer immediately without it
  • Risk of Over-Supplementation: Using BOTH UVB and D3 supplements causes hypervitaminosis D3 (D3 toxicity). Choose one method only

D3 Toxicity Warning: If providing UVB lighting, use calcium WITHOUT D3 for insect dusting. NEVER combine UVB with D3 supplements - this causes vitamin D3 overdose leading to organ calcification, kidney damage, and death. UVB requires calcium without D3; no UVB requires calcium WITH D3. Never both simultaneously.

Gargoyle geckos need low-intensity UVB appropriate for shade-dwelling species. Target UVI (UV Index) of 1.0-2.0 at basking zone.

Best Choice for Most Setups: Arcadia T8 6% or Zoo Med ReptiSun 5.0 T8 in 18-inch length. These provide appropriate UVI (1.0-2.0) for 18"x18"x24" enclosures when mounted 8-12 inches from basking area. For smaller 12"x12"x18" grow-out enclosures, use Arcadia ShadeDweller kit.

Mounting Guidelines:

  • Location: Mount UVB fixture on screen top or suspended inside enclosure. MUST be above screen (if outside) or bare bulb (if inside) - UVB cannot penetrate glass or acrylic barriers
  • Distance from Basking: Position highest basking branch 8-12 inches below UVB bulb. Closer = higher UVI (risk of overdose); farther = lower UVI (insufficient exposure)
  • Screen Barrier: Standard aluminum mesh screen blocks 30-45% of UVB output. Account for this when calculating distances. Example: 10 inches distance through screen = effective 13-14 inches
  • Coverage Area: Linear fluorescent tubes produce UVB in cone pattern. Strongest directly below bulb, weakest at edges. Ensure basking zone within central 12 inches of 18-inch bulb
  • Fixture Type: Use T8 fixture with reflector (increases output 30-40%). Avoid aquarium fixtures (splash guards block UVB)

Creating UVB Gradient:

  • High UVI Zone (Top Third): Basking branch 6-10 inches below UVB = UVI 1.5-2.0. Gecko basks here for D3 synthesis
  • Moderate UVI Zone (Middle Third): 12-15 inches distance = UVI 0.5-1.0. Moderate exposure during general activity
  • Low/No UVI Zone (Bottom Third): 18+ inches distance = UVI 0.2-0.5. Gecko retreats here to avoid UVB when desired
  • Choice is Critical: Gecko must be able to completely escape UVB by moving to ground level. Never bathe entire enclosure in high UVB

UVB Testing & Verification:

  • Solarmeter 6.5: $250 device measures UVI precisely. Gold standard for serious keepers or breeders with multiple setups
  • Budget Alternative: Follow manufacturer distance guidelines (8-10 inches for T8 5.0/6%), observe gecko behavior (should bask ~30 min daily, not avoid top entirely)
  • Signs of Correct UVB: Gecko regularly visits basking zone (10-30 min daily), vibrant coloration, clear eyes, active feeding
  • Signs of Excessive UVB: Gecko avoids top third entirely, staying at ground level constantly, squinting/closed eyes, pale washed-out coloration, skittish behavior
  • Signs of Insufficient UVB: Minimal basking behavior, MBD symptoms (bowed legs, kinked tail), lethargy, poor appetite

UVB bulbs degrade over time even when appearing visibly bright. UV-B output decreases 20-50% after 6-12 months depending on brand.

Replacement Critical: UVB bulbs appear bright long after UV-B output drops below effective levels. Gargoyle gecko experiencing UVB benefits one day may receive zero UVB the next from same bulb if overdue for replacement. Mark replacement date on calendar immediately when installing new bulb.

Gargoyle geckos need regular day/night cycle to maintain circadian rhythm. Photoperiod (light:dark ratio) affects feeding behavior, activity patterns, and breeding cycles.

Recommended Photoperiod:

  • Standard Year-Round: 12 hours light : 12 hours dark (12:12). Simple, consistent, works for non-breeding geckos
  • Seasonal Variation (Advanced): 14:10 in summer (March-August), 10:14 in winter (September-February). Mimics natural light cycles, can trigger breeding behavior
  • Timing: Lights ON at 7-8 AM, OFF at 7-8 PM (adjust to household schedule). Consistency more important than exact times
  • Dawn/Dusk Activity: Gargoyle geckos most active first hour after lights on and last hour before lights off. Time feeding for evening activity peak (6-9 PM)
  • Nighttime: Complete darkness or very dim ambient room light (moonlight equivalent). NEVER use red/blue night lights (disrupts sleep)

Light Sources for Photoperiod:

  • UVB Bulb (If Using): Provides both UVB and visible light. Run on 12-hour timer (7 AM - 7 PM)
  • Heat Bulb (Incandescent): Provides visible light + heat. Run on 12-hour timer synchronized with UVB
  • LED Plant Light (Optional): Enhances live plant growth, adds ambient brightness. Can run 12-14 hours (overlaps heat/UVB schedule)
  • Room Light: If enclosure receives bright indirect natural light from windows, artificial lighting optional (but UVB still recommended for D3)
  • Timer: Use digital timer ($10-15) to automate lights. Manual switching leads to inconsistent photoperiod

Lighting Setup Example: 18"x18"x24" enclosure with Arcadia T8 6% UVB (on timer 7 AM - 7 PM) + 40w basking bulb on dimmer (manually adjusted for temp, synced to UVB timer). LED plant light (optional) runs 6 AM - 8 PM for extended plant growth period.

Live plants in bioactive setups require appropriate light spectrum and intensity beyond what UVB bulbs provide.

Plant Lighting Options:

  • LED Plant Grow Lights: Full spectrum LEDs designed for terrariums. Brands: biodude Glow & Grow ($60-80), Jungle Dawn LED Bar ($40-70)
  • 6500K LED Bulbs: Standard daylight spectrum LEDs work for low-light plants (pothos, ferns, snake plants). $10-15 at hardware stores
  • Dual Fixture Setup: UVB for gecko + separate LED for plants. Run LEDs 12-14 hours (extended photoperiod for plant growth)
  • Intensity: Low-light tropical plants (pothos, bromeliads, ferns) thrive under moderate LED. High-light plants (some orchids) need stronger fixtures
  • Positioning: Mount plant lights alongside UVB fixture on screen top or suspend inside enclosure for even coverage

Low-Light Plants (Work with UVB Alone):

  • Pothos (Epipremnum aureum) - excellent climbing vine
  • Snake plants (Sansvieria) - vertical structure, low maintenance
  • Most ferns (Boston fern, bird's nest fern) - humidity-loving, shade tolerant
  • Bromeliads - water-holding rosettes, colorful
  • Peperomia species - compact ground cover

Lighting Success Summary: Provide low-level UVB (T8 6% or 5.0) positioned 8-12 inches from basking zone for UVI 1.0-2.0. Run on 12-hour photoperiod (7 AM - 7 PM). Replace UVB bulbs every 6-12 months depending on brand. If using UVB, dust insects with calcium WITHOUT D3. If no UVB, dust with calcium WITH D3. Gecko should bask 10-30 minutes daily and have access to complete shade zones at ground level.
