Leopard Gecko Enclosure Setup: Complete Housing Guide

A proper leopard gecko enclosure provides space for thermoregulation, exercise, and natural behaviors. This guide covers minimum requirements, equipment specifications, and step-by-step setup for a thriving habitat.

Leopard geckos are terrestrial lizards requiring horizontal space over vertical height. Proper sizing is critical for establishing temperature gradients and providing adequate exercise opportunities.

Undersized Enclosure Risk: Tanks smaller than 36"x18" do not provide adequate space for both a proper temperature gradient AND exercise. Cool and warm zones overlap in small enclosures, preventing thermoregulation.

Enclosure Material Options:

  • Glass Aquariums: Most common and affordable. Front-opening styles reduce stress during maintenance. Ensure secure mesh lid with clips
  • PVC Enclosures: Excellent heat/humidity retention, lightweight, no condensation issues. More expensive but highly durable
  • Wood with Sealed Interior: DIY option if properly sealed with water-safe coating. Must have ventilation panels
  • Avoid: Plastic tubs (inadequate ventilation unless heavily modified), screen cages (cannot maintain heat/humidity), rack systems for display animals

Setup Recommendation: 36"x18"x18" front-opening glass terrarium is the ideal entry-level enclosure. Front access reduces stress compared to top-opening tanks where you appear as a predator.

Estimated Total Initial Cost: $500-850 for complete quality setup. Budget setups may reduce cost to $350-400 but compromise longevity and sometimes welfare.

Step 1: Prepare Enclosure Location

  • Choose a location away from windows (temperature fluctuations), loud speakers, and high-traffic areas
  • Use sturdy furniture that can support 100+ lbs (tank + substrate + equipment weight)
  • Ensure access to power outlets for heat lamp, UVB, and timer
  • Position at waist height or slightly below for easy maintenance and observation
  • Confirm location has stable room temperature (68-75F ambient year-round)

Step 2: Install Substrate

  • Clean enclosure with reptile-safe disinfectant and rinse thoroughly with water, allow to dry completely
  • Add 2-4 inches of substrate (deeper in areas where gecko can dig, shallower near hides)
  • DIY Mix Recipe: 40% organic topsoil (no additives) + 40% washed play sand + 20% Excavator Clay by weight
  • Commercial Alternative: Lugarti Natural Reptile Bedding, Zoo Med ReptiSand (with caution), or Terra Sahara
  • Moisten substrate slightly (should clump when squeezed but not drip water) for easier shaping
  • Create slight slope from warm end (higher) to cool end (lower) - aids in temperature gradient

Step 3: Position Hides and Décor

  • Warm End (under basking light): Place warm hide where gecko can reach 90-92F inside. Cork bark or half-log works well
  • Middle (humid hide): Position humid hide in center or slightly toward cool end. Fill with moist sphagnum moss
  • Cool End: Place cool hide at opposite end from heat source (70-77F ambient)
  • Climbing Structures: Add rock stacks (ensure stability - glue with aquarium-safe silicone if needed), cork rounds leaned at angles, or low branches
  • Background Elements: Consider textured background or back wall ledges for added climbing surfaces
  • Spacing: Ensure gecko can move between all hides without excessive open space (creates stress)

Step 4: Install Heating Equipment

  • Mount lamp dome fixture on screen lid centered over warm hide (or use stand if fixture has clamp)
  • Install 75w halogen bulb in fixture (adjust wattage based on room temp - cooler rooms may need 100w)
  • Connect heat lamp to dimming thermostat probe positioned at basking spot height
  • Set thermostat to achieve 94-97F surface temperature at basking stone/substrate
  • Allow 30-60 minutes to stabilize, then verify temps with infrared temp gun (NOT stick-on thermometers)
  • NEVER use heat rocks, heat cables, or unregulated under-tank heaters (burn risk)

Temperature Gun Requirement: Stick-on thermometers measure air temperature, NOT surface temperature where gecko touches. You MUST use infrared temp gun to verify basking surface is 94-97F and warm hide interior is 90-92F.

Step 5: Install UVB Lighting

  • Over Mesh Option: Zoo Med T5 HO 5.0 (24" fixture for 36" tank) mounted on screen lid. Position over warm/basking area
  • Under Mesh Option: Arcadia ShadeDweller mounted inside enclosure. Requires specific distance from basking spot (check manufacturer specs)
  • Ensure UVB overlaps with basking area so gecko receives heat + UVB simultaneously
  • Position 10-12 inches from basking surface for T5 HO 5.0 (distance affects UVI output)
  • For albino/leucistic/less-pigmented morphs: increase distance to 14-16 inches OR use ShadeDweller to achieve UVI 0.5-0.7 (standard morphs need 1.0-2.0)
  • Connect UVB to timer set for 12 hours on, 12 hours off (matches photoperiod)

UVB Verification: If possible, use Solarmeter 6.5 to measure UVI at basking spot. Target: 1.0-2.0 for standard morphs, 0.5-0.7 for albinos. Without meter, follow manufacturer distance guidelines precisely.

Step 6: Add Water and Finishing Touches

  • Place shallow water dish (1-2 inches tall) in cool end - should be heavy enough not to tip (ceramic works well)
  • Fill with dechlorinated water (tap water with conditioner OR let sit 24hrs to off-gas chlorine)
  • Position feeding dish near warm hide (insects are more active at warmer temps)
  • Install digital hygrometer probe in middle of enclosure at substrate level (check ambient humidity stays 30-40%)
  • Double-check all décor is stable (rock stacks especially - can cause injury if collapse)
  • Confirm screen lid fits securely and has clips (leopard geckos can push lids off)

Step 7: Final Equipment Check

  • ALL equipment running for 24-48 hours BEFORE gecko introduction
  • Verify basking surface: 94-97F (infrared temp gun measurement)
  • Verify warm hide interior: 90-92F
  • Verify cool end ambient: 70-77F
  • Verify ambient humidity: 30-40% (digital hygrometer)
  • Verify humid hide interior: 70-80% humidity (sphagnum moss should be damp but not dripping)
  • Confirm UVB timer activates/deactivates on 12hr schedule
  • Confirm heat lamp thermostat maintains consistent basking temp (check multiple times over 24hrs)
  • Check for escape gaps at lid edges, cord holes, or ventilation panels

Cycling Period Critical: Run enclosure empty for 24-48 hours and verify all temperatures/humidity are stable BEFORE introducing gecko. Temperature fluctuations in first few days can indicate thermostat calibration issues.

Quality Over Budget: Investing in proper heating (thermostat + halogen bulb), appropriate UVB, and correct enclosure size from the start prevents costly vet bills and re-purchasing equipment. Budget options often fail within months.

Cohabitation NOT Recommended: Leopard geckos are solitary animals. While experienced keepers sometimes house females together, this is NOT recommended for beginners. Males will fight to the death. Even females can experience stress, resource guarding, and injuries from cohabitation.

If you choose to cohabit despite risks (experienced keepers only), you MUST:

  • Use 48"x24" minimum for 2 females (add 12" length per additional gecko)
  • Provide duplicate resources: 2 warm hides, 2 cool hides, 2 humid hides, 2 water dishes, 2 feeding stations
  • Never house males together or male with female(s) outside breeding season
  • Monitor daily for aggression: tail nips, missing toes, weight loss, one gecko monopolizing resources
  • Have separate quarantine enclosures ready to separate geckos at first sign of conflict
  • Expect increased feeding costs, supplement costs, and maintenance time

Reality Check: Most cohabitation attempts eventually require separation due to aggression, stress, or injuries. Single housing is strongly recommended for welfare and simplicity.
