Leopard Gecko Temperature & Humidity Guide

Proper temperature gradients and humidity levels are critical for leopard gecko health. This guide covers target zones, heating equipment, measurement tools, and common issues to ensure your gecko can thermoregulate effectively.

Leopard geckos are ectothermic (cold-blooded) and require a temperature gradient to regulate body temperature behaviorally. They move between zones depending on metabolic needs.

Surface Temperature Critical: Basking SURFACE (not air temp) must be 94-97F. Use infrared temp gun to measure surface temps. Stick-on thermometers measure air temp and are INACCURATE for reptile care.

Temperature Gradient Purpose: Gradient allows gecko to choose temperature zone based on needs. After eating, gecko moves to basking spot (94-97F) for digestion. Once warmed, gecko moves to cool zone (70-77F). Inadequate gradient prevents proper thermoregulation.

Recommended: Overhead Halogen Heat Bulbs

  • Why Halogen: Mimics natural sun, provides deep tissue heating (infrared A), warms both air and surfaces efficiently
  • Wattage: 75w for 36"x18" enclosure (adjust based on room temp - cooler rooms need 100w)
  • Fixture: Ceramic socket dome lamp rated for bulb wattage, positioned over warm hide
  • Bulb Examples: Arcadia Halogen Heat Lamp, Zoo Med Repti Basking Spot (halogen version), Philips EcoVantage Halogen PAR38
  • Distance: 8-12 inches above basking surface (adjust to achieve 94-97F surface temp)
  • Dimming Thermostat REQUIRED: Herpstat, VE, Spyder Robotics - prevents overheating and maintains consistent temps

Alternative: Deep Heat Projectors (DHP)

  • Emit infrared A and B wavelengths (deep tissue heating) without visible light
  • Excellent for night heating if room temps drop below 60F
  • Examples: Arcadia Deep Heat Projector, Pangea DHP
  • Use with dimming thermostat to maintain 70-75F night temps if needed
  • Higher cost than halogen bulbs ($50-80 vs. $10-15)

Acceptable Supplement: Ceramic Heat Emitters (CHE)

  • Emit infrared C (surface heating only, does not penetrate tissue)
  • No visible light - good for 24hr heat if room temps unstable
  • Less effective than halogen or DHP but workable
  • Examples: Fluker's Ceramic Heat Emitter, Zoo Med ReptiCare CHE
  • Requires pulse-proportional thermostat (NOT on/off thermostat)

NEVER Use Heat Rocks or Heat Cables: These cause severe thermal burns on gecko belly. Leopard geckos cannot sense heat on their belly and will sit on dangerously hot surfaces. Deaths and severe injuries common. ALWAYS use overhead heating.

Under-Tank Heaters (UTH) - Use with Caution:

  • Can provide supplemental belly heat if used correctly, but NOT as primary heat source
  • MUST be regulated with thermostat - unregulated UTH causes burns
  • Place under only 1/3 of enclosure (warm end) to allow gecko to move away
  • Max surface temp: 88-90F (measure with temp gun through substrate)
  • Better option: Use overhead heat and skip UTH entirely

Minimum Equipment: Infrared temp gun ($15-30) + 2 digital thermometers with probes ($10-15 each) + dimming thermostat ($100-180). Do NOT skimp on temperature equipment - these tools prevent fatal overheating and ensure proper thermoregulation.

Step 1: Install Heat Source

  • Position dome fixture with 75w halogen bulb over warm hide area (1/3 of enclosure)
  • Start with bulb 10 inches above substrate/basking surface
  • Connect heat bulb to dimming thermostat
  • Place thermostat probe at basking spot surface (touching where gecko will bask)

Step 2: Calibrate Basking Temp

  • Set thermostat to 95F and allow 30-60 minutes to stabilize
  • Use infrared temp gun to measure basking surface temperature
  • Target: 94-97F on surface of basking stone or substrate under heat lamp
  • Adjust thermostat setting OR bulb height if temp incorrect (increase height = lower temp; decrease height = higher temp)
  • Recheck after each adjustment and allow 30 min to stabilize

Step 3: Verify Warm Hide Temp

  • Place digital thermometer probe inside warm hide (center of hide, substrate level)
  • Target: 90-92F inside hide
  • If too hot (>92F): Move hide slightly away from heat source or increase bulb height
  • If too cool (<90F): Move hide closer to heat source or decrease bulb height

Step 4: Verify Cool End Temp

  • Place digital thermometer probe in cool end (opposite side from heat source, 4-6 inches off substrate)
  • Target: 70-77F ambient air temp
  • If too warm (>77F): Room temp too high, increase ventilation or move enclosure to cooler room; OR reduce heat bulb wattage
  • If too cool (<70F): Acceptable for cooling down; gecko should primarily be in warm zones if cool end below 70F

Step 5: Monitor for 24-48 Hours

  • Check temps with infrared gun 4-6 times over 24 hours to ensure stability
  • Measure basking surface, warm hide interior, cool end ambient every 6 hours
  • Adjust thermostat if temps fluctuate more than 3F
  • Verify night temps after lights off - should drop naturally to 60-75F (if room temp drops below 60F, add DHP or CHE for night heat)

Seasonal Adjustments: Room temperature changes with seasons. Summer may require lower wattage bulb or increased ventilation. Winter may need higher wattage or supplemental heat source. Recheck temps monthly and adjust as needed.

Leopard geckos come from arid environments and require LOW ambient humidity with access to a HIGH humidity humid hide for shedding.

High Ambient Humidity Risk: Sustained ambient humidity above 50% increases respiratory infection risk. If room humidity consistently high (tropical climates, humid basements), increase ventilation or use dehumidifier in room.

Maintaining Humid Hide:

  • Use enclosed hide (single entrance or two entrances) - must be enclosed on top to trap moisture
  • Fill hide with moist sphagnum moss (squeeze out excess water - should clump but not drip)
  • Alternative substrates: Paper towels kept damp (change every 2-3 days), coconut fiber (mist lightly)
  • Position humid hide in middle or slightly toward cool end (NOT under basking light - heat dries it out)
  • Mist humid hide substrate with spray bottle every 2-3 days to maintain 70-80% humidity inside
  • Use small digital hygrometer inside hide to verify humidity level (optional but recommended)
  • Replace sphagnum moss entirely every month (mold prevention)

Humid Hide is NON-NEGOTIABLE: Even with "perfect" 30-40% ambient humidity, leopard geckos REQUIRE a humid hide for healthy shedding. Geckos without humid hides experience stuck shed (especially toes, tail tip, eyelids) which can lead to tissue death and digit loss.

Daily Tasks:

  • Visually check digital thermometer readings (warm and cool zones)
  • Ensure heat lamp is functioning (look for visible light if halogen)
  • Check gecko behavior - basking briefly then moving to cool end = correct temps; constant basking = too cold; hiding all day = may be too hot
  • Glance at hygrometer - ambient should stay 30-40%

Every 2-3 Days:

  • Mist humid hide substrate with spray bottle (3-5 sprays) - sphagnum moss should feel damp to touch
  • Use infrared temp gun to spot-check basking surface temp (should still be 94-97F)

Weekly Tasks:

  • Measure temps at all locations with infrared gun: basking surface, warm hide interior, cool end ambient
  • Record temps in log (notebook or phone app) to track any drift over time
  • Check humid hide for mold - if mold present, replace sphagnum moss immediately

Monthly Tasks:

  • Replace humid hide sphagnum moss entirely (mold prevention even if not visible)
  • Test thermostat function: unplug thermostat briefly, verify bulb runs full power, replug and verify thermostat regulates temp again
  • Inspect heat bulb for damage or blackening - replace if degraded
  • Clean thermometer/hygrometer probes with damp cloth (dust buildup affects accuracy)

Every 6-12 Months:

  • Replace heat bulb even if still functioning (output degrades over time, especially halogen)
  • Calibrate or replace infrared temp gun if readings seem inconsistent (test against known temp like boiling water 212F)
  • Deep clean enclosure and all equipment during full substrate change

Temperature Logs Prevent Issues: Recording temps weekly helps identify gradual drift (e.g., basking temp slowly dropping from 95F to 88F over 2 months). Catching drift early prevents health issues and identifies equipment failures before they become critical.
