Science shows that heat lamps providing short wavelength infrared radiation improve digestion, immune function, and overall health. This guide explains the evidence and helps you choose the right equipment.
The Science: Short vs Long Wavelength Infrared
Not all heat is created equal. Different heat sources produce different types of infrared radiation:
OVERHEAD HEATING PREFERRED - Heat lamps provide short wavelength IR that penetrates tissues for better digestion. Heat mats/CHEs/DHPs provide long wavelength IR (less effective for health).
Daytime Heat Sources
The best daytime heat source for Pacman frogs is a white halogen or incandescent flood bulb:
Why white light bulbs:
- Produce beneficial short wavelength infrared (IR-A)
- Most closely imitate natural sunlight
- Improve digestion and nutrient absorption
- Support healthy immune function
- Create natural day/night cycle
- Much dimmer than actual sunlight (even albinos usually tolerate them)
Recommended bulb types:
- Halogen Flood Bulbs: Hardware store bulbs, 20-60w typical range, very affordable ($3-8 each)
- Incandescent Flood Bulbs: Increasingly rare due to regulations, 25-75w typical, excellent heat quality
- Pet Store "Basking" Bulbs: Same as above but marked up ($10-15), not necessary unless convenient
Wattage selection:
Start with 20-40w for most setups. Factors affecting wattage needed:
- Enclosure size (larger = more watts)
- Room temperature (colder room = more watts)
- Enclosure height (taller = more watts for same substrate temperature)
- Screen vs glass top (screen loses more heat)
- Time of year (winter needs more heat than summer)
If 40w isn't enough, try 50-60w. If too hot even with dimmer, go lower wattage.
Albino Frog Considerations
Albino Pacman frogs may be more light-sensitive, but most tolerate low-wattage heat lamps (20-40w) without issues. These bulbs are FAR dimmer than sunlight.
If your albino frog shows discomfort with heat lamps:
- Add overhead vines and foliage to break up lighting
- Try lower wattage (20-25w)
- As last resort, use DHP (loses short wavelength IR benefits)
ALWAYS try heat lamps first before switching to DHP.
Nighttime Heat Sources
Most Pacman frogs do fine with nighttime temperatures down to ~65°F (18°C). Supplemental night heat usually not needed.
If night heating required (room drops below 65°F):

- Produces long wavelength IR without light
- More effective than CHE or heat mat
- Projects heat downward like sun

Thermostat Requirements
Heat lamps and DHPs MUST be controlled by thermostats. Two thermostat types exist:
Dimming Thermostats (BEST for Heat Lamps & DHPs)
Dimming thermostats control the amount of power sent to heat source. When probe gets too hot, dimmer reduces power. When too cold, increases power.
Why dimming is essential for heat lamps:
- Prevents flashing lights (disturbs circadian rhythm)
- Extends bulb life dramatically
- Provides smooth temperature control
- Maintains stable environment
- Worth the investment for animal health
Budget Dimming Options:

Professional Grade Dimmers:
- Herpstat 1-Basic or higher: $100-200+, excellent quality, many features
- Vivarium Electronics VE-200: $80-100, reliable dimming

DIMMER THERMOSTATS REQUIRED - Heat lamps and DHPs need dimming thermostats (not on/off). Flashing disrupts circadian rhythm and causes premature bulb failure. Use manual dimmer + on/off thermostat backup if budget-limited.

Thermostat Probe Placement
- Place probe on warm side of enclosure
- At substrate level (where frog experiences temperature)
- Under decorations or secured to glass (prevent frog from moving it)
- Away from direct heat lamp beam (measures air/substrate temp, not lamp output)
- Keep probe clean and functional
UVB Lighting
UVB lighting allows Pacman frogs to synthesize vitamin D3 in their skin for calcium metabolism. Traditionally not provided, but research shows significant health benefits.
Benefits of UVB:
- Natural vitamin D3 synthesis (reduces supplement dependency)
- Improved calcium metabolism (prevents MBD)
- Enhanced immune function
- More natural circadian rhythm regulation
- Behavioral enrichment (can sense UV wavelengths)
- Mimics natural habitat (even nocturnal species exposed to UV during day)
Appropriate UVB Bulbs
Recommended UVB strength: 5.0 or 6% (forest/tropical species strength)
Target coverage: 50% of enclosure length

- Distance between bulb and substrate surface
- Whether frog is albino (lower UVI needed)

NEVER USE: Coil UVB bulbs (uneven spread), Mercury Vapor bulbs (too hot), LED UVA/UVB combo bulbs (produce dangerous UVC radiation causing skin/eye injury).
Why NOT Coil Bulbs
- Extremely uneven UVB distribution (hot spots and dead zones)
- Difficult for frog to get proper UVB exposure

Why NOT Mercury Vapor Bulbs
- Produce EXTREME heat (150-250w typical)
- Produce EXTREME UVB output (desert-level)
- Cannot be controlled with thermostats
- Will overheat and burn Pacman frogs
- Only suitable for large desert reptile enclosures (6+ feet)
Why NOT LED UVA/UVB Combo Bulbs
LED UVA/UVB bulbs are EXTREMELY DANGEROUS despite marketing claims:
- Produce UVC radiation (most harmful UV, causes skin and eye damage)
- Produce unnaturally high UVB levels even after months of use
- High UVI persists even through mesh screens
- Risk of permanent eye damage and skin injury
- Claims of safety are FALSE - independent testing shows danger
