Red-Eyed Tree Frog Feeding Guide

Red-Eyed Tree Frogs (Agalychnis callidryas) are obligate insectivores - their entire diet consists of live (or convincingly presented dead) insects. In the wild, they're opportunistic hunters that consume whatever appropriately-sized prey wanders onto their perch during nighttime foraging: moths, flies, crickets, small beetles, and other soft-bodied invertebrates. Captive nutrition requires replicating this variety while addressing the nutritional deficiencies inherent in commercially-raised feeder insects. Unlike wild insects that feed on diverse plants and accumulate minerals from natural sources, captive-bred feeders are nutritionally incomplete - they lack calcium, essential vitamins, and proper calcium:phosphorus ratios. Without gut-loading (enriching feeders before offering) and dusting (coating with supplements), captive frogs develop metabolic bone disease, vitamin deficiencies, and shortened lifespans.

Appropriate Feeder Insects

Red-Eyed Tree Frogs accept a wide variety of insects, but show individual preferences and pickiness:

NEVER feed wild-caught insects (moths, flies, grasshoppers from outside). Risk of pesticide poisoning, parasites, and bacterial contamination.

The Picky Eater Problem

Red-Eyed Tree Frogs have a reputation for being picky, unpredictable eaters:

Strategies for Picky Eaters:

  • Offer variety - rotate 3-4 insect types weekly rather than one staple
  • Feed during peak activity hours (7-9pm) when frogs are naturally hunting
  • Use feeding tongs to animate dead/sluggish insects
  • Start new feeders when frog is very hungry (skip one feeding first)
  • Remove crickets after 2 hours - they bite sleeping frogs and cause stress
  • Try canned/vacuum-packed insects for stubborn individuals (pre-supplemented)

Gut-Loading Feeder Insects

Gut-loading is feeding your feeders nutritious food 24-48 hours before offering to frogs. This transfers nutrition from feeder's gut into your frog:

Commercial Gut-Load Diets (Best):

  • Avoid: Iceberg lettuce (no nutrition), spinach (calcium binding), dog/cat food (inappropriate protein)

Supplementation Protocol

Even with perfect gut-loading, feeder insects lack sufficient calcium and vitamin D3. Dusting (coating insects with powder) fills these gaps:

Free-Range Feeding (Standard Method):

  • Release dusted insects into enclosure during evening hours (7-9pm)
  • Insects climb on plants/branches where frogs encounter them
  • Most natural method - stimulates hunting behavior
  • Pros: Natural, low stress, encourages exercise
  • Cons: Difficult to count exact intake, crickets may hide and bite frogs later, can't monitor individual frog intake in groups

Tong Feeding (Recommended for Picky Eaters):

  • Use feeding tongs (8-10" length) to hold insect
  • Wiggle insect slowly in front of frog's face to simulate movement
  • Frog strikes, loosen grip so it can grab prey
  • Pros: Ensures each frog eats, can train frogs to accept canned insects, controlled portions
  • Cons: Time-consuming, must be patient, some frogs scared by tongs initially
  • Training Period: 1-3 weeks before most frogs accept tong feeding

Feeding Dish (Not Recommended for Tree Frogs):

  • Placing insects in dish works for terrestrial frogs, not arboreal species
  • Red-Eyed Tree Frogs rarely descend to ground level to feed
  • Only viable if using climbing insects (roaches) and dish is elevated

Well-fed Red-Eyed Tree Frogs display these indicators:

  • Body Condition: Rounded (not bulging) belly, visible muscle tone in limbs, no visible hip bones
  • Activity Level: Alert and responsive during evening hours, actively hunts offered prey
  • Growth Rate: Juveniles double size every 2-3 months with proper feeding
  • Coloration: Vibrant green dorsal color, bright red eyes, no dull/dark stress coloration
  • Breeding Success: Females produce multiple clutches per season, high egg viability
  • Longevity: Reach 5-8+ year lifespan with proper nutrition (vs 2-3 years with deficiencies)
  • No MBD Signs: Strong grip strength, straight spine, no tremors or difficulty climbing

Always have backup food sources in case your supplier runs out or you can't restock:
