Uromastyx Lighting Guide: UVB and Photoperiod

Community Reviewed

Uromastyx are full-sun baskers that require strong UVB and bright visible light. Proper lighting supports vitamin D3 synthesis, bone health, appetite, and natural activity.

UVB Requirements

Aim for a basking UVI of 4.5-6.0 with a strong gradient that lets the lizard self-regulate.

UVB Targets:

High-output UVB is essential. Weak UVB or short fixtures are a leading cause of metabolic bone disease in Uromastyx.

UVB Equipment Selection

Use a T5 HO linear UVB fixture with a 12-14% bulb that spans roughly half the enclosure length.

Recommended UVB Types:

Avoid compact UVB bulbs and weak T8 fixtures for Uromastyx. They do not provide adequate UVB at safe distances.

UVB Placement Guidelines

Distance and mesh coverage change UVB intensity. Place the basking platform at the correct distance for the chosen setup.

Mounting Distance Guidelines:

Best practice: Measure UVI at the basking surface with a Solarmeter 6.5 and adjust distance to reach 4.5-6.0.

Full-Spectrum Illumination

Bright visible light improves activity and appetite. Use a 6500K LED bar that covers most of the enclosure length.

UVB and visible light are different tools. Provide both for best results.

Photoperiod Management

Use timers to keep lighting consistent and avoid irregular day lengths.
