Uromastyx are full-sun desert lizards. They need extreme basking heat, a strong thermal gradient, and low ambient humidity to digest food and stay healthy.
Target Ranges
| Parameter | Day | Night | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basking surface | 120-130 deg F | N/A | Use a raised platform 10-12 in below heat lamp |
| Warm side ambient | 95-105 deg F | 70-75 deg F | Daytime activity zone |
| Cool side ambient | 82-88 deg F | 70-75 deg F | Retreat and water dish zone |
| Humidity | 20-30% | 20-35% | Keep overall humidity low |
Basking temperatures below 120 deg F often lead to poor digestion, low appetite, and chronic health issues.
Heating Equipment Selection
Halogen flood bulbs are the best primary heat source for Uromastyx. Use a dimmer or thermostat to fine-tune surface temperatures.
| Heat Source | Wattage Range | Light Output | Best Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| Halogen flood | 75-150w | Yes | Primary basking heat |
| Ceramic heat emitter | 60-150w | No | Night heat if room is cold |
| Deep heat projector | 50-80w | Low | Supplemental warmth |
| Heat mat | Low | No | Not recommended for primary heat |
Best setup: Two halogen floods over a raised platform, controlled by a dimmer to reach 120-130 deg F surface temperatures.
Thermostat and Probe Placement
Use a dimming thermostat or a dimmer with frequent temperature checks. Place probes where the lizard actually basks.
- Place the primary probe on the basking surface, not hanging in the air.
- Use a second probe on the cool side to verify the gradient.
- Check surface temps with an infrared temperature gun daily during setup.
Unregulated heat can quickly exceed safe limits. Always control heat lamps with a dimmer or thermostat.
Humidity Management
Keep ambient humidity low while providing a localized humid burrow. Avoid routine misting that raises overall humidity.
| Method | Effect | Application |
|---|---|---|
| Deep substrate | Stable burrow humidity | Lightly dampen lower layers only |
| Ventilation | Keeps enclosure dry | Use vents or partial mesh top |
| Water dish | Minor humidity boost | Keep on cool side |
| Misting | Raises humidity quickly | Use rarely, only for burrow maintenance |
Sustained humidity above 40% can lead to respiratory issues. Keep the surface substrate dry.
Seasonal Adjustments
| Season | Temperature | Humidity | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Summer | Standard targets | 20-30% | Longest photoperiod |
| Winter | Same temps | 20-35% | Reduce light hours to 10-12 |
| Breeding (optional) | Slight night drop | Keep dry | Only for experienced keepers |
A modest seasonal light cycle change is enough for most keepers. Do not reduce basking temps below target ranges.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Basking surface too cool | Lamp too weak or platform too low | Increase wattage or raise platform |
| Cool side too warm | Enclosure too small or poor airflow | Increase ventilation or enlarge enclosure |
| Humidity too high | Water dish too large or poor airflow | Move dish, add vents |
| Nocturnal restlessness | Night temps too warm | Allow safe nighttime drop to 70-75 deg F |
| Low appetite | Basking temps or UVB too low | Verify heat and UVB output |
