Veiled chameleons require precise environmental control with UNIQUE patterns: basking heat for only 3 hours each morning (not all day), significant nighttime temperature drops (55-65F), and strict humidity cycling (low day 40-50%, high night 80-100%). These parameters mimic their native Yemeni mountain habitat and are non-negotiable for health. This guide covers heating schedules, cooling strategies, humidity cycling with foggers, and troubleshooting environmental issues.

Basking Schedule is CRITICAL: ReptiFiles specifies basking heat for 3 HOURS MORNING ONLY (7-10 AM), NOT all day. Veiled chameleons from mountainous regions experience cool temperatures most of the day. Constant basking heat causes chronic stress, dehydration, and overheating. Basking bulbs MUST turn off after 3 hours while general lights remain on 12 hours total.

Temperature Pattern is Non-Intuitive: Most reptiles have "hot side" and "cool side" horizontally. Veiled chameleons need VERTICAL gradient (warm top, cool bottom) PLUS TIME-BASED pattern (hot 3 hours morning, moderate rest of day, cool night). This triple-variable system confuses new keepers - requires careful timer management.

Basking Lights (3 Hours Morning Only):

  • ReptiFiles Recommendation: 2x 50w Exo Terra Intense Basking Spot bulbs in Zoo Med Mini Combo Deep Dome fixture
  • Why Two Bulbs: Creates wider basking zone (8-10" area vs 4-6" with single bulb), more even heating, redundancy if bulb fails
  • Wattage Range: 40-75w depending on room temp. Colder climates need 60-75w; warm climates 40-50w sufficient
  • Bulb Type: White incandescent or halogen only. NEVER colored bulbs (red, blue, purple) - disrupt circadian rhythm
  • Dimmer Option: Use inline lamp dimmer ($12-20) for fine temperature control. Adjust until basking spot reads 83-85F
  • Timer Schedule: ON 7:00 AM, OFF 10:00 AM (3 hours total). Use digital timer for precise control

Basking Branch Positioning:

  • Position horizontal branch 6-8 inches below screen mesh where heat lamp mounted
  • Branch should be 8-12 inches long, 1-1.5 inches diameter (chameleon body fits comfortably)
  • Chameleon's back will be 6-8" from heat source when perched - measure this distance with ruler

Do NOT Use Heat All Day: Common beginner mistake is running basking lights 12 hours (all lights on period). ReptiFiles data clearly states 3 HOURS ONLY. After 10 AM, ambient room temperature (72-78F) is appropriate - no additional heat needed. Overheating from prolonged basking causes chronic stress, suppressed immune system, and premature death.

Required Equipment:

  • Infrared Temperature Gun (Essential): $15-25. Etekcity 774 or similar. Point-and-shoot surface temperature measurement. Check basking branch temp at 8:00 AM - should read 83-85F

  • 11:00 AM (1 hour after heat off): Check mid-level temp = should have dropped to 74-78F naturally
  • 2:00 PM (afternoon): General enclosure temp = 72-78F. Too hot? Increase ventilation or reduce room temp
  • 8:00 PM (1 hour after lights out): Temp beginning to drop toward nighttime range. Should be 68-72F
  • 6:00 AM (before lights on): Check overnight low temp = 55-65F ideal. If <55F repeatedly, add nighttime CHE

ReptiFiles emphasizes HUMIDITY MUST CYCLE: 40-50% day, 80-100% night. Constant high humidity causes respiratory infections; constant low humidity causes dehydration. Natural fog cycles in Yemeni mountains create this pattern.

Humidity Cycling is THE MOST COMMON MISTAKE: Keepers see 80-100% night requirement and mist heavily all day, creating constant high humidity = respiratory infection within weeks. OR they see 40-50% day requirement and under-mist, never reaching 80-100% at night = gradual dehydration. BOTH extremes required - cycling is key.

Fogger Setup (Mandatory for Night Humidity):

  • Equipment: Cool mist humidifier (ultrasonic or evaporative). $30-60 from pharmacy/big box stores. Reptile-specific foggers work but not required
  • Fogger Type: Cool mist ONLY (not warm mist - raises temps excessively). Ultrasonic produces finest mist; evaporative uses fan (noisier)
  • Water Requirement: MUST use distilled water. Tap water creates white dust (mineral deposits) coating surfaces and causing respiratory irritation
  • Placement: Position fogger next to enclosure with output hose/tube directed into top vent. Fog heavier than air - settles downward naturally
  • Schedule: Timer-controlled: ON 1:30 AM, OFF 6:00 AM (4.5 hours). Some foggers have built-in timers; otherwise use external timer
  • Refilling: Check reservoir every 2-3 days. Consume ~2-3 liters distilled water per week

Fogger Maintenance (Critical):

  • Deep Clean Weekly: Empty reservoir, scrub with white vinegar (removes biofilm), rinse 4-5x thoroughly. Biofilm harbors bacteria causing respiratory infections
  • Disinfect Every 2 Weeks: After vinegar clean, soak parts in diluted bleach (1 tbsp per gallon water) for 10 minutes, rinse exhaustively 10+ times until no bleach smell
  • Replace Ultrasonic Discs: If ultrasonic type, replace vibration disc every 3-6 months (calcium buildup reduces output)
  • Watch For Mold: Black/green spots in reservoir = mold. Clean immediately and increase cleaning frequency to 2x weekly

Fogger Hygiene Warning: Humidifiers/foggers are #1 source of respiratory infections in chameleons when not maintained. Bacteria (Pseudomonas, Aeromonas) and mold spores multiply in stagnant water, get atomized into fog, inhaled by chameleon = pneumonia. Symptoms: Open-mouth breathing, wheezing, mucus discharge, lethargy. ALWAYS use distilled water, clean weekly minimum, disinfect every 2 weeks.

  • 1:30 AM Misting (2-3 min): Coincides with fogger start. Wets surfaces for chameleon to drink if wakes during night. Creates saturation environment
  • 6:00 AM Misting (2-3 min): Coincides with fogger end. Morning drinking session - chameleon wakes, licks droplets from foliage for 30-60 min. Critical hydration time
  • 9:00 PM Misting (2-3 min): Evening drinking session before sleep. Chameleon actively drinks during dusk period. Sets up humidity for night
  • Optional Afternoon Dripper (3:00-5:00 PM): Gravity dripper (Zoo Med Big Dripper) provides moving water stimulus. Not misting - just slow drip (1 drop per 2-3 seconds) onto plant leaves

Manual vs Automatic Misting:

  • Manual (Budget Option): Pump pressure sprayer ($20). Set phone alarms for 1:30 AM, 6 AM, 9 PM. Requires waking at 1:30 AM (major commitment)
  • Automatic (Strongly Recommended): MistKing Starter system ($150-180) programmable for precise timing. Worthwhile investment for consistent hydration
  • Misting Technique: Spray walls, branches, foliage until water droplets visible on 75% of surfaces. Takes 2-3 minutes per session. Avoid spraying chameleon directly

Summer Modifications (Hot Climate or Heat Waves):

  • If room temperature exceeds 80F: Turn OFF basking lights entirely. Ambient heat sufficient
  • If enclosure reaches 88F+: EMERGENCY cooling needed. Evaporative cooler ($80-150) or portable AC directed at room (not directly at enclosure). Increase ventilation by removing screen top covers
  • Monitor during heat waves: Check temps every 2-3 hours. Chameleons overheat quickly above 90F

Winter Modifications (Cold Climates):
