UVB Lighting & Photoperiod for White's Tree Frogs

White's Tree Frogs need gentle UVB exposure for vitamin D3 synthesis and bone health, paired with a consistent day-night cycle. Target UVI 0.5-1.0 at the highest perch with ample shade so they can self-regulate exposure.

Bulb Types & Mounting

  • T5 HO linear 6%: Best for White's Tree Frogs. Pair with reflector for proper output; mount 10-14 inches above mesh screen.
  • T8 5.0: Acceptable for smaller/shorter enclosures; lower output requires closer placement (8-12 inches through mesh).
  • Compact coils: Avoid - narrow beam causes uneven UVB and localized burn risks.
  • Always mount outside the enclosure on top of mesh screen. Never place UVB bulbs inside the tank.
  • Mount on the warm side so White's can bask under both heat and UVB together.

UVB fixtures must ALWAYS be mounted outside the enclosure, above the mesh screen. Never place UVB bulbs inside the tank - burn risk and improper exposure.

Distance Guide (Typical 6% T5 HO)

Measure distance from the bulb surface to the highest perch where your frog will bask. This ensures proper UVI exposure at the basking site.

Measurement Tip: Use a ruler or tape measure from the center of the bulb straight down to the basking perch. If using a Solarmeter 6.5, verify UVI at the perch surface (not mid-air).

Mesh Density Matters: Fine aluminum screen (typical screen tops) blocks more UVB than coarse reptile mesh. If UVI is too low, consider switching to a coarse mesh lid or moving the bulb 2-3 inches closer.

Fixture Placement & Coverage

  • Run the UVB fixture front-to-back on the warm side so perches can gradient under it.
  • Pair UVB with the heat source - frogs will bask where warmth and UVB overlap.
  • Provide cover: branches and plants should allow frogs to choose partial shade.
  • Check UVI at three points: highest perch, mid-height, and cool side to confirm a gradient.
  • Keep bulbs dry - shield from mister nozzles and dripping plants.
  • If using mesh, position the bulb directly over the basking perch opening (no offset).
  • Use reflectors to prevent stray light blasting the room instead of the habitat.

Bulb Replacement Schedule

  • Replace T5 HO bulbs every 12 months - UVB output drops even if they still light up.
  • Replace T8 bulbs every 6-9 months due to faster output degradation.
  • Mark installation date on the fixture or set a calendar reminder.
  • Keep bulbs clean - dust and mineral buildup reduce UVB transmission.

UVB bulbs lose output long before they stop producing visible light. Replace on schedule to maintain proper vitamin D3 synthesis.

Photoperiod & Day-Night Cycle

  • Baseline: 12 hours ON / 12 hours OFF year-round for most indoor setups.
  • Optional seasonal variation: 13-14 hours in summer, 10-11 hours in winter for breeding cues.
  • Sync UVB with visible light and heat - run all three together to maintain natural activity patterns.
  • Use timers to maintain consistency - irregular lighting stresses frogs and disrupts feeding behavior.
  • Frogs are nocturnal; they will be most active at dusk and during the dark period.

Consistency matters more than the exact hour count. Pick a schedule and stick to it - White's thrive on routine.

Quick Checklist

  • Perch available under UVI 0.5-1.0 with proper basking temp.
  • Shade and foliage within the UVB zone for self-regulated exposure.
  • UVB fixture mounted outside/above enclosure, never inside.
  • No glass between bulb and frogs - glass blocks UVB.
